Interview with Kanthan Theivendran
“We need to put an end to data which is siloed across healthcare boundaries and organisations, and introduce universal standards relating to the way that healthcare data is stored and used.”
Read our interview with Kanthan Theivendran, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust, who shared his views and experience on the subject of data interoperability in the healthcare sector, and the importance of an open-data platform approach for the advancement of healthcare data.
Save the date!
We are thrilled to announce the openEHR International Conference will take place in Barcelona on June 6th, 2023. This conference is a remarkable opportunity for healthcare professionals, IT developers and researchers to gather and learn about building the third generation patient-centric electronic health record.
The conference is organised by Sistema de Salut de Catalunya and Fundació TICSALUT, and will take place at the prestigious Faculty of Medicine of Universitat de Barcelona, part of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
More details to follow, so watch this space.
Launch of the Clinical Program Board
openEHR International has formed the Clinical Program Board (CPB), which is responsible for clinical modelling and related areas. The CPB will initially consist of three co-chairs: Dr Paul Miller, Vanessa Pereira, and Dr Joost Holslag. Their main task will be to define goals, build a roadmap, and determine resourcing needs. The CPB will grow quickly to include new members from the remaining pool of applicants and engage the community’s best-known experts via the Experts Panel associated with the CPB. The highest priority is scaling the clinical modelling effort.
To reach the CPB, use ‘@CPB’ in Discourse, email cpb@discourse.openehr.org, or interact on the public clinical categories on Discourse.
Rewired 2023
“Less of a conference session, more of a manifesto and a call to arms.”
That’s how Bryn Harries, Head of Digital Transformation at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board described our session at Rewired on Tuesday. Big thanks to Rachel Dunscombe, openEHR International co-chair; John Meredith, Assistant Chief Architect, Digital Health and Care Wales; Ian McNicoll, CEO of freshEHR and Paul Miller, Clinical Lead, NES Technology Service for presenting ‘Data First: Why openEHR is your health platform foundation’ at the expo. It was an inspiring panel talk, with our advocates explaining how openEHR-based platforms are revolutionising health IT by democratising patient data.
There were also a session from Robert Hunter on the use of an openEHR-based CDR in Scotland, and later an event of the main policy stage, on the need to support patient-centric care pathways which included John Meredith and Alastair Allen of Better on the need to move to patient-centric health data.
Finally on Day 2, Gary MacAllister, CTO at One London, described how the openEHR-based London Universal Care plan was deployed in only seven months, with a number of new care journeys on the stocks to be supported.
The event also saw the launch of our UK affiliate programme – openEHR UK. Congratulations to the team! You can find them on LinkedIn, Twitter and Discourse

Happy 20th Birthday to us!
On 13th March 2023, openEHR marked its 20th anniversary and David Ingram, President of openEHR, reflected on the organisation’s milestone and our mission to create effective and sustainable digital care records. Making reference to the challenges faced by healthcare IT and emphasising the importance of prioritising citizens and shared knowledge in the next 20 years, David suggests “openCare” as a fitting name for this next phase of the mission. Too true! Read his blog.
David has also recently written a book on the history of computing in the healthcare domain, called Health Care in the Information Society.
“It draws substantially on personal experience of the creation and sustaining of openEHR and other missions and endeavours, such as that of OpenEyes. It reflects on where we have reached, together, today, and of how what has been achieved, collaboratively, can help support the reinvention of health care for tomorrow.”

The book has been accepted for publication by OpenBookPublishers and will be free to download. This means however that David has to cover the costs – open-Access authors receive no remuneration from their works – so please consider supporting the book here on the OpenBookPublishers crowdfunding site.
Congratulations to the Veratech team
This week also saw the finalisation of their clinical modelling project with CatSalut.
“The aim of this project was to lay the foundations and prepare the groundwork for a platform that allows health professionals to represent their knowledge in a structured way with a longitudinal vision. It represents a strategic starting point for the future development of transactional and informational programs in an automated way in openEHR modeling.”
And finally…
Check out this stirring rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ at the launch event of openEHR UK…
